Ireland Staff Ride

21 November 2006

Ireland

Here are some pictures from the Ireland staff ride that we went on after the Activation Ceremony. We stayed on Curragh Camp near the city of Newbridge (about 40 minutes from Dublin). We did our actual staff ride to Vinegar Hill where the Irish Rebels fought the British in the late 1700s, not too long after the American Revolution. On Friday we got to see a Hurling game the the Irish Defense Force played in, then it was on our own time. A few of us went to Dublin for a night and then CPT Sean Spence (B Company Commander), CPT Dave Perry (HHC Company Commander) and I decided to drive down to do the Ring of Kerry. On the way down there, we came across the Rock of Cashel, which is supposedly where St. Patrick pulled the shamrock out of the ground giving Ireland it's symbol. It was really neat and totally unexpected. We got down to the Kenmare (which was a great town on the South side of the Ring of Kerry) and spent the night. The following day, the weather was horrible, but we still did the Ring and it was absolutely amazing...it must be incredible with good weather. Overall, it was a great trip and a good start to my Company Command....not time for the real challenges.

Here's me in front of the Rock of Cashel.

Here are some pictures from the Hurling Match...it seems closest to Lacross...with a little bit of Baseball and Football and Soccer involved. It was interesting.

It looked like a very violent game, but it was fun to watch.

Here's me playing with a rifle that was supposedly used in the Battle of Vinegar Hill.

Here's me on top of Vinegar Hill with Enniscorthy in Wexford County in the background.

Someone apparently stole the Tree of Liberty, because we couldn't find it.

Here's a picture of Staigue Fort, just off the Ring of Kerry. It is said that the Fort was built in 1000 B.C. and was made only of Rocks on top of themselves. It was really great...this shot must look amazing on a clear day.

Here's me in a hole in the Staigue Fort. The hole was really small.

Here's a picture from the Ring of Kerry.

Here are some pictures of the Gap of Dunloe. It was amazing inside the gap...unfortunately, the weather of awful and we could barely stand outside because of how much rain and wind there was...but the pictures still look good.

The water from the rain, flowing down from the mountain made this a good picture, even if I did get a rain drop on the lens prior to the picture. Even with the weather conditions, this Gap was unbelievable.
